Naptime questions from a toddler…
Boycub6: Who’s your daddy?
Writer: (I unexpectedly tear up.) Well, my daddy was Gpa Al. He died before you were born.
Boycub6: Oh. Who’s your mommy?
Writer: (Again, unexpectedly blinking back tears.) My mommy was Eva. She’s also is in heaven.
Boycub6: Oh. Where is heaven?
Writer: I’m not sure exactly. Way up high.
Boycub6: Do we take a spaceship there?
Writer: (Smiling now.) No, I don’t think so.
Boycub6: Oh. Do we take horses?
Writer: (Hmm, that’s a good one…) Well, there are horses in heaven. The Bible says horses came down and went back up again. Maybe.
Boycub6: When are you going to die?
Writer: I don’t know. Probably not till you’re all grown up and have children.
Boycub6: How will you get there?
Writer: (He’s trying to avoid a nap and being super smart about it because He’s keeping me fully engaged!) I expect Jesus will give me directions.
Boycub6: How old are you?
Writer: All right, go to sleep.
Boycub6: Sing “Version” to me.
Writer: Okay. (I sing my version of Silent Night with lots of fun notes while following the main tune.) Night, night.
I kiss Boycub6.
He needs me to kiss his stuffed toy monkey, George.
I pretend George snored at me and revel in cute giggles.
And I slip out thanking God I am alive to spend these special, poignant moments with my grandchildren.
